BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System - Professional Education
The INAMED Health Standard of Care
Use of the BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System requires a
multidisciplinary approach to all aspects of patient selection,
peri-operative management, and long-term follow-up. It is the
policy of INAMED Health to follow established surgeon selection
and training guidelines, and to promote a multidisciplinary team
approach for long-term follow-up. It is also the policy of
INAMED Health to provide the BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System only
to surgeons who have completed a BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System
workshop.
Joint ASBS/SAGES Guidelines
The American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) and Society of
American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) have
issued a joint document, "Guidelines for Surgical Treatment of
Morbid Obesity." The following criteria reflect our support for
these guidelines.

INAMED Health Guidelines for Surgeon Selection and Training • Advanced laparoscopic skills and experience, ability to suture
laparoscopically and completion of at least 25 laparoscopic
Nissen fundoplication procedures. • Completion of at least 25 bariatric procedures or completion
of a comprehensive bariatric surgery course that details the
issues of patient selection, procedural options, peri-operative
care and long-term management, such as provided by the American
Society for Bariatric Surgery. • Participation in an INAMED Health sponsored or authorized
comprehensive workshop. • Training and ability to do adjustments with X-ray equipment,
or the ability to obtain cooperation of the Radiology Department
and to provide Radiology personnel with adequate training for
adjustments. • Commitment and ability to make the BioEnterics® LAP-BAND®
System a significant component of a multidisciplinary bariatric
practice providing long-term support and follow-up. • A comprehensive bariatric patient support program that
includes appropriate hospital facilities, nutrition and exercise
counseling, and psychological, general medicine and radiological
support personnel. • Commitment and ability to perform at least 25 BioEnterics®
LAP-BAND® System procedures each year (about 2 per month). • Willingness and ability to be proctored for initial procedures
by surgeons experienced in the placement and use of the
BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System. • Willingness and ability to have in-services for OR staff by
